To help address the housing shortage in Derby, an office block (Norman House) has been converted into 134 apartments. As part of the conversion, electric heating, mains cold water distribution systems and hot water cylinders were installed in each room.
Uponor InvolvementUponor engaged with the client at the design stage to provide a complete plumbing solution (Multi-Layer Composite Pipework and Quick and Easy fi ttings), that was easy to install and also hard to dismount. Due to the scale of the building, an initial concern was that there would be leaks in the pipework. Uponor’s Quick and Easy (Q&E) solution helps eliminate leaks with its secure watertight connection. In total, Uponor provided a distribution manifold for each floor, which was made up of Multi-Layer Composite Pipework (MLCP) fittings. To ensure water was supplied to each apartment, PEX pipework was connected to the manifold with Q&E fittings.
The Benefits
In comparison to copper, MLCP pipework is quicker to install and prevents oxygen ingress. The client also benefited from less wastage and fewer fittings. Combining the MLCP pipework with Q&E fittings not only provided a secured connection, but also helped to help ensure the water pressure for each apartment was at an optimum level.

Oval Village
As part of a close collaboration with Berkeley and Malcolm Building Services, Uponor has supplied its Uni-Pipe PLUS multilayer composite pipe (MLCP) and S-Press PLUS fittings to the Oval Village development in central London. The Uponor system was selected over copper due to its ease of installation, reliability of testing and the technical support provided by Uponor.
Refurbishment of a prefabricated building
During the renovation of a prefabricated building in Zwickau, Robinienweg, a low installation height stood in contrast to the desire for more energy efficiency and comfort through underfloor heating. The solution: a slimline combination of Minitec underfloor heating from Uponor and N 440 leveling screed from Knauf.

Thanks to advanced prefabrication, the project period is shorter and the risks are lower. The As Oy Varsta company in Turku is the first R2I pilot site. An 8-storey apartment is rising in a former bank district in Lahti. The target will contain 265 apartments and is designed by A1 Arkkitehdit Oy and will be built by Nuorisosäätiö. There are 256 rental apartments reserved for students on floors 2-7. Uponor R2I blocks will be installed in all of the student-apartments in connection with bathroom and kitchen elements. Aleksi 5 is the first new destination in which R2I blocks are being delivered and in which sound-absorbing Decibel drains are used.
