Industry Expert Reveals Best Practices for Integrating PEX into Plumbing Designs

On June 10, 2024, industry expert Brian Calotta, business development manager for Engineering Services at Uponor, presented a live webinar on “Integrating PEX into Plumbing Designs Using ASPE Best Practices.”
ASPE (the American Society of Plumbing Engineers) is the international organization for professionals skilled in the design, specification, and inspection of plumbing systems, and the webinar focused on how designers and engineers can specify and design efficient, effective domestic water systems with PEX for maximum reliability and results.
Although PEX has been used for more than 40 years in residential applications, it is still a relative newcomer in commercial building design and construction. With many engineers still specifying copper for domestic water systems, it is important to educate the industry on the benefits of PEX as well as the material characteristics to consider when designing a system with this innovative product.
During his presentation, Calotta highlighted the numerous advantages and practical applications of PEX in plumbing applications and discussed the differences between the various PEX types — PEX-a, PEX-b, and PEX-c. He also revealed the major benefits of PEX, including the flexibility, durability, and freeze resilience, that make it an excellent choice over traditional materials, like copper.
The presentation also touched on compliance with industry standards and optimizing system performance, emphasizing the importance of proper installation techniques, including the use of appropriate fittings and the need for proper testing after installation.
Calotta explained the freeze resilience of PEX allows it to expand and contract without cracking, making it a superior alternative to traditional, rigid materials, especially in colder climates or areas that might experience unexpected cold snaps.
He also discussed environmental benefits of PEX, such as its lower energy requirements during manufacturing and its potential for reducing overall water usage in buildings.
At the end of the hour-long presentation, Calotta answered questions from the attendees, offering advice on troubleshooting and best practices for specific scenarios.
